Course Details

Who Should Attend This workshop is intended for existing GenStat users who would like to sharpen their skills in the analysis of linear models. So you should already have some experience of using of GenStat e.g. for simple ANOVAs or regressions. The lectures will be interspersed with practicals to introduce you to real-life data sets and illustrate the methods. The practicals also give you the opportunity to discuss your own problems and investigations with the presenter.
Duration / Date 1 day - 9th December 2008
Overview GenStat provides some very powerful techniques for fitting statistical modes to data, that are nevertheless straightforward to use. In this workshop we will focus on the REML algorithm for analysing linear mixed models (sometimes called multi-level models), and the use of generalized linear models for analysing counts and proportions.
Learning Objectives The workshop is designed to introduce you to REML and generalized linear models in GenStat, and give you the underlying knowledge and confidence to use them correctly and effectively.
Contents

The Course is in 2 sessions:

Session 1

REML for analysing unbalanced and correlated data

  1. Introduction
REML as a natural extension to ordinary ANOVA
  2. Analysis of spatially correlated data
How to improve the precision of your analysis by fitting models to the correlations between the plots
  3. Repeated measurements
How to obtain an accurate (and valid) analysis by modelling how the correlations between successive measurements change over time
  4. Fitting nonlinear models to repeated measurements

Session 2

Generalized linear models for analysing counts and proportions

  1. Introduction
Generalized linear models as a natural extension to ordinary regression
  2. How to analyse counts and proportions with additional sources of random variation
What to do when you have counts or proportions from a design that you’d normally analyse by REML.
Cost A$775
